About

"My design path has provided me with opportunities to work on complex design problems where attention to design and detail are important — a reflection of an interest that began in childhood."

Scott J. Griffith, AIA, is the principal of Scott Griffith Architects, a Nashville-based practice. His passion for design began before he could articulate it — by age seven he was drawing home plans, and as a child his favourite hobby was designing entire cities, complete with complex highway systems. That instinct for spatial thinking never left him.

Born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, Scott moved at age three to Mexico, where his parents served as missionaries for nearly seven years. The family then relocated to McAllen, Texas, before returning to Poplar Bluff, where Scott completed his high school education. That early life — shaped by different cultures, languages, and landscapes — gave him an enduring sensitivity to the way place and environment define how people live.

He considered careers in Veterinary Sciences and Journalism before choosing Architecture. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Kansas State University and moved directly to Chicago, where he lived and worked for seven years. Graduating into a national economic downturn, he began his career in corporate interior architecture — an experience that proved formative. The discipline demanded absolute precision: every square foot accounted for, every detail coordinated, every material specified to perform.

Over the course of his career Scott has worked across both corporate interiors and full architectural shell-and-core projects — a combination that is rare in the profession and that defines the breadth he brings to every commission. After Chicago he moved to Houston, Texas, continuing to work across both disciplines at scale, before eventually settling in Nashville, Tennessee, where he now serves clients across the country.

Outside of practice, Scott paints in oils and works in stained glass — two disciplines that demand the same attention to colour, light, and material detail that architecture requires. He believes his lifelong appreciation of civil and structural engineering, of art, and of the built environment are all expressions of the same underlying curiosity.
